2027 Showdown: Tinubu Faces United Front As Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, Others Plot Power Shift

Political analysts agree that 2027 could mark a critical turning point. As the opposition tightens ranks and the APC ramps up its defenses, the battle for Nigeria’s top seat is already underway, long before any ballots are cast.

2027 Showdown

As Nigeria’s 2027 general elections draw closer, a growing alliance of political heavyweights is shaking up the country’s political landscape, with mounting pressure on President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Insider reports reveal a fast-developing coalition involving key figures from opposition parties as well as disenchanted APC stalwarts, an alliance aimed squarely at unseating Tinubu’s administration in the upcoming polls.

Among the top names leading the coalition talks are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-SGF Babachir Lawal. They are joined by Ralphs Okey Nwosu, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling serious cross-party collaboration.

Is an Atiku-Obi Ticket on the Horizon?

Speculation is mounting that Peter Obi may emerge as Atiku’s running mate in 2027, reviving their 2019 alliance under a different banner. Back then, the duo ran under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although the 2019 and 2023 elections ended in defeat for both men, either individually or jointly; analysts believe a united ticket could amass enough votes to dethrone the APC. In 2023, President Tinubu won with 8.79 million votes, while Atiku and Obi secured 6.98 million and 6.1 million votes respectively. Some political observers suggest that a combined candidacy could have secured over 13 million votes.

APC Reacts: Moves to Consolidate Power

The APC, reportedly rattled by the growing coalition, is working behind the scenes to strengthen its base. A party insider told our correspondent NewsOnline Nigeria that a new strategy has been adopted to guarantee automatic tickets for first-term governors, ensuring loyalty and encouraging defections from rival parties.

“First-term governors are promised automatic tickets for re-election,” the source said. “This is not just about the tickets. The party will put its full weight behind them to secure victory.”

The insider cited examples from Delta and Akwa Ibom States, claiming that incumbent governors are defecting to the APC out of political necessity.

“In Delta, President Tinubu had endorsed Festus Keyamo for the 2027 governorship. The governor knows he can’t beat him, especially with Tinubu’s backing, so he’s jumping ship,” the source added.

Governors are also allegedly being allowed to handpick candidates for National Assembly seats—a strategy to boost party cohesion ahead of 2027.

Coalition Talks Face Internal Turmoil

Despite the momentum, the emerging coalition is not without friction. Disagreements have erupted over which political party will serve as the alliance’s platform.

Following reports that the ADC was selected as the coalition’s base, the party discreetly amended its constitution to grant equal privileges to incoming members believed to be a move to accommodate high-profile entrants like Atiku and Obi. However, this triggered pushback from existing ADC leaders who are unwilling to cede power to newcomers.

Elsewhere, Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), publicly rejected any plan to step down for another candidate, casting doubt on a unified opposition front.

Peter Obi’s Position Still Unclear

Adding to the uncertainty, a viral video of Peter Obi reaffirming his commitment to contesting under the Labour Party (LP) has fueled speculations that the coalition may eventually adopt LP instead.

However, the Labour Party swiftly distanced itself from any coalition plans. “We’re not part of any alliance,” said Obiora Ifoh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary. “There will be no automatic ticket for anyone, not even Obi.”

Yunusa Tanko, leader of the Obidient Movement, also debunked claims of Obi accepting a running mate position. “Peter Obi hasn’t committed to being anyone’s deputy,” he said. “For now, it’s just like-minded politicians exploring possible collaboration.”

What Lies Ahead?

While momentum builds toward a formidable opposition alliance, deep-rooted rivalries and party interests may hinder a unified effort. Yet, if the coalition succeeds in presenting a single, powerful ticket, Nigeria could witness one of its most competitive presidential elections in history.

Political analysts agree that 2027 could mark a critical turning point. As the opposition tightens ranks and the APC ramps up its defenses, the battle for Nigeria’s top seat is already underway, long before any ballots are cast.
