Jonathan and Makinde among others may join the 2027 Presidential race as PDP is set to unveil zoning formula.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will on August 25, 2025, unveil the zoning formula it will adopt for the 2027 general election, setting the stage for what could be one of the most competitive presidential primaries in the party’s history.

According to The Nigerian Tribune, the PDP timetable, signed by National Organising Secretary Umar M. Bature, indicates that the programme will run from August 24 to December 2025, culminating in the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Bayelsa State governor, Duoye Diri, who chairs the zoning committee, is expected to present recommendations to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for ratification. The party’s constitution, under Section 7(2)(c), mandates rotation and zoning of party and public offices to promote equity and fairness.

The zoning announcement comes amid intense speculation over a possible presidential bid by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Party leaders say the decision will shape the PDP’s strategy to reclaim power in 2027. Former national vice chairman Eddy Olafeso said the party is “working hard to salvage the country from dire straits” and will partner with Nigerians to deliver solutions.
