Yemi Alade Opens Up on How Lying About Her Age for Three Years Led to Depression

The award-winning singer shares a personal story about battling depression after concealing her real age early in her career.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Nigerian Afrobeats star Yemi Alade has opened up about how lying about her age for several years once pushed her into depression.

In a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the award-winning singer revealed that she spent three years claiming to be 22, only to later realise she was actually 25 at the time.

Yemi explained that the realisation deeply affected her mentally, as she struggled to come to terms with the truth about her actual age.

“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years, I kept saying 22,” Yemi recalled. “Then one day, I calculated it and realised I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. For three years, I didn’t even know my real age—it was mental.”

The “Knack Am” hitmaker explained that the experience taught her how easily self-deception can affect one’s mental health, describing those years as a difficult yet eye-opening period in her life.
