Yakubu Gowon has called for the respect of the judiciary in post-election disputes.
NewsOnline reports that Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has called on all aggrieved parties in the February 25th general election to respect the sanctity of the court and accept its final decision.
This online newspaper understands that Yakubu Gowon made this appeal in Abuja during the 15th edition of the PUNUKA Annual Lecture 2023 and symposium, which was held in honour of the late Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Chike Idigbe.

The ex-military Head of State emphasized the need for a strong, independent, and impartial judiciary and admonished politicians and the public to abide by the decisions of the court.
Yakubu Gowon stated that the role of the judiciary in nation-building cannot be overemphasized. As a former head of state, he has seen first-hand the importance of the judiciary in maintaining stability and order in society.
He urged Nigerians to allow the apex court to do its work and accept its decision to maintain the sanctity of the judiciary as an institution.
Yakubu Gowon Calls For Respect Of Judiciary in Post-Election Disputes
Yakubu Gowon also acknowledged the challenge of the country since independence and affirmed that the judiciary plays a vital role in keeping Nigeria united as a nation.
During the event, Gen Gowon paid tribute to the late Justice Chike Idigbe, whom he described as a dedicated jurist who was brave in dispensing justice.
Yakubu Gowon Gowon extolled Idigbe’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law, which he believed was a testament to his unflinching character and his belief in Nigeria.
Several dignitaries graced the occasion and extolled the legacy of the late legal luminary, including Babatunde Fashola, Minister for Works and Housing; Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice, Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice among others.
Anthony Idigbe, Senior Partner, Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, also spoke at the event and called for holistic judicial reforms in Nigeria. He urged judges to adhere to judicial precedent to prevent abuse and strengthen the judicial system.
He also highlighted the need for guidance from Justice Idigbe’s cases, which focused on substantive justice and established that form should never override substance.
Gen Gowon’s call for respect for the sanctity of the court and acceptance of its decisions is crucial to Nigeria’s stability and democracy. It is a timely reminder for all aggrieved parties to allow the judiciary to do its work and uphold the rule of law.
