1. The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Monday as the first day of Shawwal following the inability of the National Moon Sighting Committee to sight this year’s Shawwal moon. The Secretary of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), Mallam Yahaya made this known yesterday.
2. One person has been confirmed dead and many others injured after members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shi’ites, clashed with security agents in Kaduna. The incident occurred while the Shi’ites were on a procession to mark the annual Quds day.
3. Some youths in Kano have given a seven-day ultimatum to former President Goodluck Jonathan to declare interest in the 2023 Presidency. The youths, in their hundreds, thronged the Kano State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday, after staging a rally around some strategic places in the city.
4. Some unidentified gunmen, on Saturday, attacked soldiers at a checkpoint in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. Sources said the gunmen wielded automatic rifles, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, just as they came in their numbers.

The wave of insecurity in the South-East, especially in Imo and Anambra States, has been linked to the continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. Frontline politician and founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chekwas Okorie made the assertion yesterday.
6. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday, described the conduct of the 2022 Local Government elections in the State as peaceful, fair and credible. The Governor made the observation at LGEA Primary School, Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area shortly after casting his vote.
7. Unknown gunmen numbering about eight invaded a popular beer parlour in Obiofia Village, Osumenyi, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing four men, mainly youths, and a lady said to be the owner of the drinking joint.
8. The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, has disclosed plans to offer free legal services to eight female inmates serving various terms in the Correctional facility. The FIDA Chairperson, Kano branch, Barr. Bilkisu Suleiman, who dropped the hint, said the inmates were imprisoned for minor cases such as debt, stealing and fighting.
9. The Academic Staff Union of Universities said its members going to participate in the 2023 elections would be doing so on their own and would not be told anything. ASUU said it withdrew from participating in elections in Nigeria because the system was flawed.
10. No fewer than 59 suspects are on the Wanted List of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for various fraudulent activities amounting to about N435bn and $397,758,000 (about N165bn). The offences range from money laundering to obtaining money by false pretence, fraud, internet-related offences and issuance of dud cheque.
