President Tinubu has ordered a free healthcare access for low-income retirees and minimum pension guarantee under CPS.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of free healthcare access for low-income retirees enrolled under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The president gave the directive following a briefing at the State House by the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.

Tinubu Backs Pension Reforms to Protect Vulnerable Retirees

President Tinubu described the initiative as vital to upholding the dignity and social protection of Nigeria’s senior citizens, especially those who gave their productive years to the nation but now live on limited incomes.

In addition to healthcare coverage, the president also ordered the swift implementation of previously approved pension increases and the rollout of a minimum pension guarantee to shield Nigeria’s most vulnerable retirees from economic hardship.

“Our pensioners must not be abandoned. Free healthcare for low-income retirees is not a luxury—it is a necessity,” the president was quoted as saying.

Tinubu Demands Urgent Resolution of Police Pension Crisis

Tinubu also addressed the lingering crisis in police pensions, demanding immediate reform to ensure that officers who served the nation are allowed to retire with dignity and peace of mind.

PenCom DG Briefs President on Ongoing Reforms

During the meeting, PenCom boss Ms. Oloworaran highlighted a range of reform measures aimed at protecting pension assets against inflation and stabilizing the macro-economic value of retirees’ savings.

Among the proposals is the introduction of foreign currency pension contributions, allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the national pension scheme, thereby increasing its inclusiveness and resilience.

Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Growth

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that Tinubu welcomed the reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic policies, especially those designed to protect vulnerable Nigerians and promote social justice.

“President Tinubu remains focused on making economic reforms people-centered, and retirees must be at the heart of our national social safety net,” Onanuga noted.
