Popular Televangelist, Jimmy Swaggart is dead.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Prominent American Televangelist, Jimmy Swaggart has passed away at the age of 90, weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home on June 15.

Swaggart, a towering figure in the evangelical world, was widely known as the founder of the SonLife Broadcasting Network and pastor of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge. Renowned for his impassioned preaching style, musical prowess, and media reach, Swaggart rose to become one of the most recognizable religious figures in the United States during the 1980s.

A cousin of music legend Jerry Lee Lewis, Swaggart often blended fiery sermons with soulful gospel music, releasing numerous recordings throughout his career. His 1981 album Worship earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance, underscoring his influence in both religious and musical circles.

At the peak of his ministry, Swaggart’s televised services drew millions of viewers worldwide and generated over $100 million in annual revenue. His sermons filled stadiums and his rivalry with fellow televangelists like Jim Bakker and Oral Roberts became part of the broader religious discourse of the era.

However, Swaggart’s career was derailed by scandal. In 1988, he became embroiled in a prostitution controversy that erupted after he accused another preacher of infidelity, only to be caught in a sting operation orchestrated in retaliation. The Assemblies of God denomination subsequently defrocked him. A second similar scandal in 1991 further damaged his credibility and reduced his influence on the national stage.

Despite these setbacks, Swaggart remained active in ministry, continuing to preach at the Family Worship Center and maintain a devoted core following through his broadcast network.

Jimmy Swaggart leaves behind a complex legacy, celebrated for his stirring gospel performances and spiritual fervor, yet marked by personal failings that redefined his ministry’s trajectory.

He is survived by his wife Frances, son Donnie, and a global community of followers who remained loyal through his decades-long ministry.
