The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slated to meet on Thursday, September 8, to look at issues confronting the party ahead of the 2023 campaign starting September 28.

Newsonline reports that sources however disclosed that the meeting will not discuss the issue of Ayu’s resignation as proposed by Wike’s camp.

A source said, “The meeting has been slated for Thursday, September 8, 2022. We are not discussing any resignation issue, we have passed that stage.’’

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, has assured Nigerians that the PDP are united amid all the challenges it has now.

Debo told journalists in Abuja that the PDP is united and committed to rescuing the county from the All Progressives Congress (APC) come the 2023 election.

He assured that the NEC meeting will address issues confronting the party to come out stronger.

According to Debo, “The PDP is alive. We are active and we are working hard on our mission statement. We are working on our campaign council. In a couple of days it will be unveiled for the people to see.
“Irrespective of what we are reading in the newspapers, I can tell you that the PDP is firm and ready for the 2023 general elections. We tell our members and Nigerians that the PDP is here and the darkness is going and the countdown has started.”

Ologunagba added, “The key is this: the entire members of this party, leaders and stakeholders agreed on one issue; that Nigeria is the main issue and that we must rescue the country.’’

Recall that there have been serious confrontations between Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, with Atiku Abubakar, the party presidential candidate; and Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman.

Wike’s camp is aggrieved with the way Atiku Abubakar maneuvered the system of the party to emerge as the presidential candidate of the PDP in the May primary election.

The party is however confident that though Wike is having consultations with the APC and Labour Party candidates, including Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi, he will not leave the party.

According to reports, Wike has candidates for governorship, senatorial, and house representatives elections, which will make it impossible for him to leave the party.
