Monkeypox: Adamawa Confirms 5 Cases, Examining 57 Cases

Adamawa State Ministry of Health has confirmed 5 cases of monkeypox and placed 57 under examination.

Newsonline reports that the state Ministry of Health says it had laboratory-confirmed five cases of highly contagious viral disease as of June 12.

Adamawa State Ministry of Health, Director of Public Health, Dr. Celine La’ori, disclosed in a press interview that the first case was recorded in April at the state capital, Yola.

Dr. Celine La’ori explained that the confirmed cases of the monkeypox virus cut across the two metropolitan Yola North and Yola South local government areas.

La’ori said while it is the first time Adamawa having such outbreaks, health experts in the state have been trained beforehand through the help of partners.

She said while sensitization of the public about the monkeypox virus is still low in the state, the government has scared up efforts to adequately inform the citizens about the virus.

La’ori also said that to curtail the spread of the disease, an emergency operation center had been set up by the state government.

“It was the first time of having such an outbreak in the state, thus workers were trained by our partners. We also embarked on sensitization exercise to the affected areas,” she said.

La’ori said the symptoms of monkeypox include fever, accompanied by rashes that look like chicken pox.

“When you have such rashes, rush to the emergency operation center for proper diagnosis,” she advised.

She called on community leaders and the media to join hands with the state government to close the knowledge gap about the virus and called for proper sensitization among the people.
