Ghanaian Sounds Shaped Nigerian Hits — Singer Lasmid Claims

Ghanaian artist Lasmid has asserted that several Nigerian hit songs were inspired by Ghana’s unique sound and rhythm, sparking fresh debate over musical influence in West Africa.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Ghanaian singer Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, popularly known as Lasmid, has claimed that Ghana played a major role in shaping the success of Nigerian music.

The “Bad Boy” crooner argued that many Nigerian songs gained popularity first in Ghana before becoming major hits across Africa.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Lasmid added that Ghanaian audiences often show more support for Nigerian artists than for their own homegrown talents.

“We love Nigerians so much—sometimes even more than ourselves. When a Nigerian artist releases a song, it often becomes a hit in Ghana before taking off in Nigeria. Many Nigerian songs gained traction here first,” Lasmid said.

He cited Spyro’s hit track “Who’s Your Guy” as an example, claiming it became a massive success in Ghana before Nigerians caught on.

Lasmid’s comments have reignited the long-standing Ghana vs. Naija debate on social media, with fans from both countries sharing divided opinions.

A few years ago, a similar controversy arose when Mr Eazi stated that Ghanaian sounds influenced Nigerian music—a remark that drew heavy backlash from Nigerian fans at the time.
