Edo Broadcasting Service Takes Major Steps Towards Revitalisation

In a remarkable turn of events, the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) has made significant strides in reviving its operations, particularly with the much-anticipated reactivation of its Ihievbe station in Edo North. This station, which has languished in neglect for over a decade, is set to breathe new life into the community it serves.

 

For years, the EBS faced challenges that hampered its core mandate of informing, educating, and entertaining the residents of Edo State. The situation was exacerbated by the leasing out of the relay station in Edo Central, located in Uromi, by the previous administration, which rendered it impossible for EBS to utilise the facility effectively. However, the current administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo is determined to change the narrative.

On December 22, 2024, Sulaiman Aledeh, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of EBS, paid a crucial visit to the abandoned Ihievbe station, following instructions from Governor Okpebholo. During this visit, Aledeh engaged with the local community, sharing the governor’s ambitious plans to revitalise and activate the long-dormant station. This visit marked a turning point, as Aledeh initiated plans to restore the station to operational status.

 

Today, a historic milestone has been achieved for the Okpebholo administration, as the Ihievbe station broadcast its successful test run, signalling the imminent completion of necessary refurbishments. After being off the air for a decade, the excitement in the community is palpable. Aledeh expressed optimism that while some aspects are still to be finalised, the remaining work required to keep the station fully operational will be completed in the coming days.

 

Notably, this resurgence comes just shy of 100 days into Governor Okpebholo’s tenure, highlighting a quick turnaround and a commitment to development. Once fully activated, the station will cater to a diverse audience by broadcasting in local Edo languages, major Nigerian languages, and Pidgin English, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.

 

Aledeh has also called upon key stakeholders, particularly local government administrators, to play an active role in supporting the return of EBS Ihievbe. He emphasised the importance of ensuring the security of staff and equipment, as well as stabilising power supply to facilitate seamless operations.

 

As EBS takes these promising steps forward, the revitalisation of the Ihievbe station is not only a victory for the broadcasting service but also a testament to the commitment of the Edo State government to enhance communication, foster community engagement, and promote local culture. The future looks bright for EBS and the communities it serves.
