CVR 60 Days Extension: SERAP Disagrees With INEC, Vows To Go Court

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has said it disagreed with the 60 days voters’ registration extension by INEC.

Newsonline reports that SERAP said the 60 days extension of voters’ registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, fell under statutory provisions and international standards.

SERAP said while it commends INEC for the extension, the electoral body ought to follow the statutory provisions and international standards to ensure the citizens are not disenfranchised.

“We welcome the extension by INEC of the voter registration deadline by 60 days. But this extension still falls short of statutory requirements and international standards.

“We’ll see INEC in court next week to make our case for INEC to fully comply with the Electoral Act.”

Newsonline had reported that INEC which announced the closing of the voters’ registration exercise on June 30, extended the deadline by 2 months.

The extension follows a Federal High Court ruling on Monday, which granted an interim injunction in favour of SERAP and 185 concerned Nigerians, barring INEC from effecting the June 30 deadline.

On Wednesday INEC announced the extension of the voters’ registration exercise by 60 days to ensure eligible Nigerians get registered.
