Court has set July 22 to hear fresh bail plea of alleged Train Kidnap Negotiator Tukur Mamu.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled July 22, 2025, to hear a new bail application filed by Tukur Mamu, the Kaduna-based media consultant and alleged negotiator in the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train abduction case.

Mamu, who is currently standing trial on a 10-count terrorism-related charge, is seeking release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to receive urgent medical treatment. His legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Johnson Usman, argued that his health has significantly deteriorated in detention, necessitating immediate surgery.

In his motion, Mamu urged the court to consider his right to proper healthcare, stating that continued incarceration without medical access threatens his life.

However, the Federal Government, through prosecuting counsel David Kaswe, has strongly opposed the bail request. In a counter-affidavit, the prosecution insisted that Mamu remains a flight risk and reminded the court that an earlier bail plea had already been denied due to the gravity of the charges.

The government also maintained that the DSS possesses adequate medical facilities capable of managing Mamu’s condition, and highlighted the severity of the allegations against him.

Justice Muhammed Umar adjourned the proceedings until July 22, when both parties will present arguments on the fresh bail request before the court delivers a ruling.

Mamu was first arraigned on March 21, 2023, on charges of allegedly supporting terrorist operations. He is accused of acting as a conduit for ransom payments to Boko Haram insurgents, collecting over $420,000 and ₦21 million from relatives of kidnapped train passengers during the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna rail attack.

The Federal Government alleges that the funds facilitated the operations of the terror group and formed part of the grounds for Mamu’s ongoing prosecution.
