BREAKING: PDP Governors Reportedly Set To Join APC Ahead of 2027 Elections (FULL LIST)

“The APC is keen on taking over the South entirely. It’s all part of the President’s roadmap for the next elections. They’re reaching out to our governors, and some of them are seriously considering it,” the source said.

Five PDP Governors are reportedly set to join APC ahead of 2027 elections.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that a fresh wave of political realignment may soon hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as five of its serving governors are reportedly on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to a new report by The Sun.

The governors said to be in talks with the APC include two in their final term and three others currently serving their first term in office.

Following the 2023 general elections, the PDP retained control of 13 states, including Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Osun, and Oyo. The party also held Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, and Plateau States.

However, the PDP’s grip has weakened in recent months. It lost Edo State to the APC in the last off-season governorship election. More recently, Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom reportedly defected to the APC, along with key members of their respective Houses of Assembly and political allies.

These defections have effectively reduced the number of PDP-controlled states to 10.

Sources within the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed to The Sun that the APC is aggressively lobbying five additional governors to switch allegiance. According to the NWC insider, the campaign is part of a broader political strategy being orchestrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consolidate support in the South and boost his chances for re-election in 2027.

“The APC is keen on taking over the South entirely. It’s all part of the President’s roadmap for the next elections. They’re reaching out to our governors, and some of them are seriously considering it,” the source said.

If the defection plan succeeds, the PDP’s presence in the geopolitical South may be significantly weakened, raising further questions about the party’s ability to mount a strong opposition ahead of the next general election.
