PDP has named a new substantive National Chairman amid Wike controversy.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Ambassador Iliya Damagum as its substantive National Chairman.

The announcement was made on Monday during the party’s 102nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, marking a decisive move in the party’s leadership structure.

However, the development comes against the backdrop of ongoing controversy surrounding the influence of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, whose role in the party has sparked internal divisions. Party insiders suggest that the NEC meeting was dominated by discussions over Wike’s continued sway in PDP affairs, with some stakeholders expressing concern that his influence threatens the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Damagum, who had been serving in an acting capacity since the suspension of former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, now assumes the role on a substantive basis as the PDP looks to consolidate ahead of future political battles.

More details are expected to emerge following the conclusion of the NEC meeting.
