Report has claimed that Sokoto Inmates declared Nnamdi Kanu “President” after his arrival.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that a new report by The Sun has alleged that inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Sokoto informally declared Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as their “president” shortly after he was transferred to the facility.

Kanu was moved to Sokoto Prison following his recent conviction. Justice James Omotosho had sentenced him to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on seven terrorism-related charges, including secessionist activities, membership of a proscribed organisation, violent attacks on security personnel, destruction of public property, and the importation of an unregistered radio transmitter.

Before his sentencing, Kanu had been held for an extended period at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja throughout the duration of his trial.

According to Daily Sun, an unusual scene played out when he arrived at the correctional centre. The report claims that several inmates expressed excitement at seeing him and symbolically referred to him as the “Prison President.” Some reportedly attempted to greet him, praising what they described as his boldness and outspoken nature.

Authorities have not publicly commented on the reported incident.
