Amnesty International Report On Killings In South-East

IGP has ordered a review of Amnesty International Report on killings in South-East.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive review of Amnesty International’s latest 128-page report titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria.”

The report had accused the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies of extrajudicial killings and widespread human rights violations in the region.

Reacting on Saturday, Egbetokun directed relevant police departments and field commands to conduct a meticulous line-by-line assessment of the allegations, cross-checking Amnesty’s claims against internal operational records, intelligence reports, and updates from tactical units across the South-East.

While acknowledging the concerns raised, the IGP insisted that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to the protection of fundamental human rights, stressing that past Amnesty International reports contained “factual inaccuracies and sweeping generalisations.”

His directive comes just 48 hours after the Defence Headquarters dismissed the report, urging Nigerians to instead recognise the sacrifices of security operatives who “gave their today for a safer country tomorrow.”

Egbetokun assured that the outcome of the review would be based strictly on verifiable facts and operational evidence.

“After the review, the Force will release a detailed and evidence-backed response addressing each allegation raised in the report,” he stated.

The police chief described the process as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public trust, strengthen internal accountability, and provide clarity on sensitive issues.

Reaffirming the NPF’s commitment to global best practices, Egbetokun noted that reforms in human rights training and internal accountability are being expanded. He also expressed readiness to engage civil society groups, the National Human Rights Commission, and international partners in addressing security and rights concerns.

The IGP, however, urged stakeholders to approach such matters with objectivity, factual accuracy, and a balanced understanding of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
