Government has declared two days monthly public holiday to encourage farming in the state.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has announced that the first and third Fridays of each month will be designated as work-free days to encourage workers to engage in farming activities effectively.

This Nigeria news platform understands that Governor Eno made this declaration during the 2024 May Day celebration at the Uyo Township Stadium under the theme “People first.”

Addressing the audience, Eno emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing workers’ welfare. He stated, “Since assuming office, we’ve made efforts to prioritize the welfare of workers. We will continue to take care of workers’ welfare.”

Highlighting financial commitments, Eno revealed, “We’ve released N16.1 billion for the payment of gratuity arrears, and I’ve ordered an immediate release of N2 billion to further clear the backlog, totaling N18.1 billion paid so far by my administration.”

Expressing gratitude to organized labor, Eno said, “I made a pledge to strengthen our relationship, and I’ve kept that promise. Your support during the elections was crucial, and I’m here today because of it.”

Enumerating achievements, Eno stated, “We’ve disbursed over N16.1 billion in gratuities, and I’m approving another N2 billion for April’s payments. We’ve also refunded outstanding contributory pension schemes and invested in workers’ housing.”

Regarding minimum wage, Eno affirmed, “We’ll await federal government details and implement the new minimum wage. The Bulk Purchase Agency is a short-term solution; we must focus on agriculture for long-term sustainability.”

In addressing farming initiatives, Eno declared, “The first and last Friday of every month will be Farm days. We’ll monitor to ensure everyone participates, emphasizing that it won’t be a day for funerals.”
