BREAKING: Goodluck Jonathan Speaks On PDP’s Alleged Collapse Claims

Jonathan reaffirmed that the PDP remains a major pillar of Nigeria’s democracy and the only surviving original political party since 1998.

Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed PDP’s alleged collapse claims.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has dismissed speculations that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in decline, describing the party as “alive, strong, and resilient.”

This Nigeria news platform understands that Jonathan reaffirmed that the PDP remains a major pillar of Nigeria’s democracy and the only surviving original political party since 1998.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by the party’s National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja.

The meeting centred on internal reconciliation and strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Emphasising the party’s history and institutional strength, Jonathan said the PDP is more than a political platform, describing it as a national institution that has played a critical role in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“The PDP has been a key contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited immensely from the party, serving as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I remain grateful and committed to supporting its growth,” he said.

The former president urged the party’s leadership to place national interest and institutional development above personal ambitions, stressing that strong political parties are vital for democratic stability.

Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance and continued loyalty to the party, assuring him that the PDP is implementing a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” to rebuild and reposition the party.

“Our objective is to return power to the people and re-establish the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.

Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd), Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and other NWC members.
