
NewsOnline reports that about 350 foreigners have also applied to citizens of Nigeria according to the Ministry of Interior.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, disclosed the data on Thursday, alongside his Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, while featuring at the 64th edition of the State House briefings coordinated by the Presidential Media Team, in Abuja.
According to Belgore, Nigerians who applied to renounce their Nigerian citizenship between 2006 and 2021 were 150. He highlighted that a further increase was recorded last year with 159 renunciations recorded in 2022.
On the sidelines of the media briefing, he disclosed that the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship has scheduled a meeting for the 7th of February to consider another 350 foreign applicants seeking Nigerian citizenship.
Dr Belgore said, “After the meeting, these applications for naturalization, when successful, will be sent to Mr President-in-Council for approval. Now down to those Nigerians who renounce their citizenship, so far we have registered a total of 309.
“Between 2006 and 2021, 150 Nigerians renounced their citizens. In 2022 alone 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenship,” he said.
