APC Targets Defections From Five Opposition Governors Ahead of 2027 Elections

Arodiogbu dismissed the much-talked-about opposition coalition between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party leader Peter Obi as political theatre, calling it “a media stunt” with no real momentum.

APC is currently targeting defections from five opposition Governors ahead of 2027 elections.

As political realignments gather steam ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed plans to woo at least five governors from opposition parties into its fold.

This revelation follows the recent resignation of the party’s former National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and forms part of a broader strategy to consolidate power and deepen the party’s influence across key regions.

In an interview with The PUNCH, APC National Vice Chairman (South East), Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, confirmed that the party is in advanced discussions with governors from Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, Kano, and either Abia or Enugu States.

“We are talking about governors from Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, Kano, either Abia or Enugu. In the next two months, you will see them join us officially,” Arodiogbu stated.

The APC has recently seen a wave of high-profile defections, including those of Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Former PDP vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa and several lawmakers have also crossed over. Additionally, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has publicly backed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, sparking speculation of a possible defection.

Arodiogbu dismissed the much-talked-about opposition coalition between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party leader Peter Obi as political theatre, calling it “a media stunt” with no real momentum.

“These politicians just want to stay relevant. Nigerians are aligning with the APC because we are delivering,” he added.

He also hinted at ongoing overtures to Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, key political figures in Rivers State, and even Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke—though he acknowledged resistance from some Osun APC stakeholders regarding Adeleke’s possible entry into the party.

On Anambra’s political future, Arodiogbu clarified that while Soludo has shown public support for President Tinubu, the APC remains focused on fielding its own candidate, backing businessman Nicholas Ukachukwu as its flagbearer in the state.

With these strategic moves, the APC is positioning itself to reinforce its national dominance ahead of the 2027 elections, banking on defections, regional alliances, and internal restructuring to shore up its political capital.
