ASUU has threatened ‘mother of all strikes’ over 2009 Agreement with FG.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed to embark on what it described as the “mother of all strikes” if the Federal Government fails to honour the 2009 agreements reached with the union.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Calabar, Chairman of the University of Calabar (Unical) chapter, Dr. Peter Ubi, said the planned industrial action would commence once the national body declares it after its August 28 meeting.

Ubi listed the unresolved demands to include:

  • Renegotiation of the 2009 agreement

  • Sustainable funding and revitalisation of Nigerian universities

  • Payment of outstanding 25–35% wage awards and three months’ salary arrears

  • Settlement of promotion arrears spanning over four years

  • Remittance of withheld third-party deductions

He accused the Federal Government of failing to honour promises made, stressing that the union has exhausted every dialogue option.

Meanwhile, the Unical ASUU chapter also called for a halt to the proliferation of private universities in Nigeria, warning that it undermines quality education.

According to Ubi, Nigeria currently has 72 federal universities and 159 private universities, with overstretched resources and underutilised facilities threatening academic standards.

This comes as the Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu, recently approved a seven-year moratorium on establishing new federal tertiary institutions — though nine new universities were still approved despite the freeze.
