Peter Obi has confirmed talks and possible defection to PDP amid 2027 political realignment in Nigeria.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that amid growing speculation over his next political move, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has confirmed ongoing talks with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking through Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Obi revealed that discussions are underway with the PDP, emphasizing that he remains open to aligning with any political force committed to building a better Nigeria.

“It is no longer a secret. The PDP has made and is still making overtures,” Yunusa said in Abuja. “Several of their leaders have spoken publicly about this. Our principal, Mr. Peter Obi, has always maintained that his priority is Nigeria, not personal ambition.”

Yunusa stressed that Obi is not focused on political positioning but is willing to engage in conversations that could lead to national salvation.

“Discussions are ongoing and when the time comes, a decision will be made collectively in the best interest of Nigeria,” he added.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the possibility of Obi returning to the PDP, the party he left in May 2022, is being interpreted as part of a broader realignment ahead of 2027, with opposition forces seeking a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Katch Onanuju, a founding member of the Obidient Movement and Director General of the Heritage Centre, also weighed in, describing the dialogue between Obi and PDP leaders as a welcome and strategic development.

According to him, “Most of the problems the opposition is trying to fix began within the PDP. The solution may also lie in uniting the PDP with other opposition forces to confront the elephant in the room.”

He traced the 2023 political fractures to PDP’s refusal to zone its presidential ticket to the South after President Buhari’s eight-year tenure, a decision that led to Obi’s exit and the rebellion of the G-5 Governors.

“With 2027 approaching, another chance has emerged to right the wrongs and offer Nigerians a fairer and more inclusive political direction,” Onanuju said.

Echoing the sentiment, PDP chieftain and former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, said on Arise TV that Obi has what it takes to win the presidency if he emerges as the PDP’s candidate.

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner, has not officially declared a defection, but the confirmation of talks with the PDP marks a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of 2027.
