Peter Obi has broken his silence and released evidence over alleged ties to Abacha regime.

Amid swirling allegations linking him to the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has responded with a firm rebuttal, backed by official documents.

In a statement released Wednesday, Obi addressed what he described as “politically motivated falsehoods” circulating on social media, particularly claims by former presidential aide Reno Omokri, who alleged Obi’s involvement with the Abacha government via activities at Lagos’ Tincan Island Port.

Obi clarified that he had never met Abacha until he was co-opted along with others into a Taskforce on Port Decongestion, set up to address serious delays in clearing goods.

“This was a civic intervention, not a political engagement,” Obi said, attaching a letter documenting his appointment to the taskforce.

He stressed that as a trader and importer at the time, his involvement was driven solely by concern for economic disruption caused by congestion at Nigerian ports.

“We approached Abacha not as political actors but as concerned citizens,” Obi explained. “Our aim was to restore efficiency and protect livelihoods, not to endorse any government.”

Calling the claims a distraction, Obi reiterated his commitment to transparency and civic duty, asserting that the evidence is now on record “for posterity.”

This statement comes as political tensions rise ahead of the 2027 elections, with Obi frequently targeted by misinformation campaigns.
