Electronic Transmission of Election Results

Senate has rejected amendment to mandate electronic transmission of election results.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Senate has rejected a proposed amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the Electoral Amendment Bill that sought to make the electronic transmission of election results compulsory.

Under the proposed change, presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would have been required to upload polling unit results in real time to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal once Form EC8A was duly completed, signed and countersigned by party agents.

However, lawmakers declined to adopt the amendment, opting instead to retain the existing provision of the Electoral Act. The current law states that “the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including the total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot, in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.”

The decision effectively leaves the mode of transmitting election results to the discretion of INEC, rather than making electronic upload mandatory.
