BREAKING: Former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami Remanded in Kuje Custodial Centre

Justice Nwite held that since a formal written bail application had already been filed and served on the EFCC, the interest of justice required that the anti-graft agency be given adequate opportunity to respond, in line with due process.

Former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami has been remanded in Kuje Custodial Centre.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application.

Malami, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), will remain in custody until January 2, 2026, when his legal team is expected to move and argue his written bail application before the court.

The court on Tuesday declined an oral bail application moved by Malami’s lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, ruling that granting the request would amount to ambushing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the case.

Justice Nwite held that since a formal written bail application had already been filed and served on the EFCC, the interest of justice required that the anti-graft agency be given adequate opportunity to respond, in line with due process.

The judge stressed that hearing the oral application without allowing the prosecution to react would be procedurally unfair, adding that all parties must be afforded equal opportunity under the law.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to January 2, 2026, for the hearing of Malami’s bail application.

Details later.
