NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Argentina captain Lionel Messi has set a new benchmark for the most assists in international football.

The Inter Miami star achieved the milestone on Wednesday after registering two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico in a friendly match at Chase Stadium.

With the double assist, Messi surpassed his former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain teammate Neymar, who previously held the record for Brazil.

The 38-year-old maestro registered an assist in each half, bringing his total assists for Argentina to 60.

Messi now holds one more assist than Neymar, who has 59 for Brazil.

Across 194 appearances for La Albiceleste, Messi has also scored 114 goals, while Neymar achieved his tally in 128 matches for the Seleção.
