Utah Prosecutors Charge Suspect in Killing of Charlie Kirk, Seek Death Penalty

Gray confirmed he is filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty, stressing the decision was made independently “based solely on the available evidence and the nature of the crime.”

Utah Prosecutors have charged the suspect in the killing of Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk and sought death penalty.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that prosecutors in Utah on Tuesday formally charged a 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus speaking event last week.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced that Tyler James Robinson has been indicted on multiple counts, including aggravated murder, a capital offense.

Authorities allege Robinson fired a single rifle shot from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck as he addressed students at a university event. The suspect was arrested following a 33-hour manhunt.

“After reviewing the evidence law enforcement has collected, I am charging Tyler James Robinson with aggravated murder, along with six additional counts, including obstruction of justice and witness tampering,” Gray said at a press briefing. He added that Robinson allegedly instructed his roommate to remain silent after the shooting.

Gray confirmed he is filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty, stressing the decision was made independently “based solely on the available evidence and the nature of the crime.”

Kirk, 41, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a high-profile conservative youth organization closely aligned with former President Donald Trump. Known for his combative style and social media presence on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, Kirk was a polarizing figure who frequently clashed with critics over issues such as transgender rights.

The assassination has ignited a wider political debate. On Monday, the White House unveiled plans to combat what it called a growing left-wing “domestic terror movement,” sparking concerns among conservatives about free speech and political targeting.

Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel faced a heated Senate hearing Tuesday after initially announcing and then retracting a suspect’s arrest in the hours following the shooting. Patel, appointed by Trump, came under sharp questioning from both Republicans and Democrats, with Senator Cory Booker leading particularly tense exchanges.

The case now moves toward trial as Utah prosecutors prepare to pursue the death penalty against Robinson.
