Tiwa Savage Admits She Once Struggled with Her African Identity

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that she wasn’t always proud of being African, reflecting on how her perception changed as she embraced her roots and became a global music icon.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has dismissed claims that Afrobeats is currently experiencing its worst run in the past two decades.

This comes after notable industry figures, including music executive Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, suggested in separate interviews and social media posts that the genre is in decline.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Tiwa Savage countered their views, confidently declaring that Afrobeats remains strong and unstoppable.

Tiwa Savage Dismisses Afrobeats Decline Claims, Says the Genre Is “Unstoppable”

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has refuted claims that Afrobeats is losing momentum, insisting that the genre is instead thriving and gaining more global recognition.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Savage argued that Afrobeats continues to dominate charts and fill stadiums worldwide despite lacking proper support and infrastructure.

The award-winning artist reflected on her childhood in London, admitting she once felt unhappy being African but now takes pride in her heritage thanks to the cultural impact of Afrobeats.

“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We created it with little to nothing—no support, no infrastructure, no belief. Growing up, I wasn’t happy being African, but now I’m so proud because of how far Afrobeats has come,” she said.

Savage emphasized that the genre’s success is proof of African resilience and creativity, concluding, “They tried to quiet us down, but the music isn’t going anywhere. We are Africans, and we are unstoppable.”
