NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his political alignment and deepening the ongoing crisis in the state.
Fubara announced his defection on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
According to the governor, fully aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration required an open and formal move, not what he described as “backyard support.”
“We can’t support President Tinubu if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support,” Fubara told stakeholders.
“Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC.”
The announcement comes amid heightened political tension in the oil-rich state, where a prolonged standoff between Fubara and key political interests within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has unsettled governance.
It also follows a closed-door meeting between President Tinubu and Governor Fubara earlier on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting was held against the backdrop of worsening political friction in Rivers State and uncertainties surrounding Fubara’s future within the PDP.
