ASP Nuhu Usman
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a suspect in Effurun.
The decision follows a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which investigated the incident alongside other internal procedures. Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja, the IGP confirmed that the officer and members of his team have been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
According to findings by the panel, the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
The committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable, noting that upon dismissal, they will be handed over to judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.
The IGP has endorsed the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance, Disu stressed that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he stated.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, assuring them that justice would be pursued transparently to reinforce public trust and accountability.
The killing of the 28-year-old has sparked widespread outrage, particularly on social media.
Police said the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
The IGP urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating the Force’s commitment to professionalism, human rights, and accountability at all levels.
