House of Reps Confirms 46 Proposals For New States, 117 For LGAs in Constitution Review

If approved, these new states would significantly reshape Nigeria’s current 36-state structure.

House of Reps has confirmed receiving 46 proposals for new states and 117 for LGAs in constitution review.

 

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has officially acknowledged receiving 46 proposals for the creation of new states and 117 requests for additional local government areas (LGAs) from across Nigeria.

 

This was revealed in a document released by the committee detailing submissions from various geopolitical zones.

Full List of Proposed States by Region:

North East

  1. Savannah State – carved out of Borno
  2. Kwararafa State – from Taraba
  3. Katagum State – from Bauchi
  4. Amana State – from Adamawa
  5. South Sardauna State – from Taraba
  6. Muri State – from Taraba

North West

  1. Gurara State – from Kaduna
  2. New Kaduna State – from Kaduna
  3. Hadejia State – from Jigawa
  4. Gobir State – from Sokoto
  5. Kainji State – from Kebbi and Niger
  6. Tiga State – from Kano
  7. Ghari State – from Kano

North Central

  1. Edu State – from Niger
  2. Okun State – from Kogi
  3. Okura State – from Kogi
  4. South Plateau State – from Plateau
  5. Lowland State – from Plateau
  6. New Plateau State – new configuration from existing Plateau
  7. New Kogi State – from parts of Kogi, Nasarawa, and Edo
  8. Ifesowapo State – from Kwara
  9. Abuja State – from the FCT
  10. Apa State – from Benue
  11. Apa-Agba State – from Benue
  12. Ayatutu State – from Benue

South East

  1. Orashi State – from parts of Anambra, Imo, and Rivers
  2. Orlu State – within the South East zone
  3. Anioma State – within the South East zone
  4. Etiti State – within the South East zone
  5. Aba State – within the South East zone
  6. Adada State – from Enugu

South South

  1. Atlantic City State – from Rivers
  2. Bori State – from Rivers
  3. Iwuroha State – from Rivers
  4. Obolo State – from Akwa Ibom
  5. Warri State – from Delta
  6. Toru-Ebe State – from Delta

South West

The proposals, according to the committee, will undergo review and possible inclusion in the next phase of constitutional amendments. If approved, these new states would significantly reshape Nigeria’s current 36-state structure.
