FirstBank is set to roll out inclusive banking services for visually impaired and physically challenged customers.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that FirstBank, West Africa’s premier financial institution and a leader in financial inclusion, has announced plans to introduce specially tailored banking services for blind, partially sighted, and physically challenged customers across its operations.

The initiative underscores FirstBank’s ongoing commitment to financial inclusion and diversity, reflected in its gender-focused policies, partnerships, and initiatives such as the FirstBank Women Network. The Bank currently maintains a 41:59 female-to-male staff ratio, with women occupying 37% of management positions. Its membership of UN Women also reaffirms its alignment with the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles on equal opportunity, inclusion, and non-discrimination.

Commenting on the upcoming rollout, Patrick Akhidenor, Chief Risk Officer and Chairman of FirstBank’s Sustainability Committee, said:

“Everyone deserves access to financial services whether physically or digitally. We recognise this, and we are providing financial services that are both accessible and affordable to visually impaired and physically challenged customers at all our touchpoints. We are making it possible for them to manage their accounts independently and securely.”

The accessibility features will be introduced in phases across all FirstBank subsidiaries and locations. Transaction documents will be available in braille, audio, large print, and digital formats, while ATMs will be upgraded with high-contrast screens and voice-prompt commands. Cards will feature tactile motifs and braille inscriptions for easy recognition, while existing soft PINs and tokens will be enhanced for secure access. Product brochures will also be redesigned in braille and audio formats to aid understanding and engagement.

The initiative is aligned with both the Central Bank of Nigeria’s financial inclusion strategy and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, both of which advocate equal access to financial services.

With this move, FirstBank is setting a new benchmark for inclusive and ethical banking in Nigeria and across West Africa—ensuring that individuals of all abilities can independently and confidently manage their financial affairs.
