El-Rufai Dismisses Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Chances Over Economic Realities

El-Rufai made it clear that, in his view, Tinubu's administration is not in a position to win public support for a second term.

El-Rufai has dismissed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election chances over economic and political realities in the country.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has strongly expressed doubt over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, citing Nigeria’s current economic and political challenges as significant obstacles.

In a recent interview during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) National Updates, El-Rufai made it clear that, in his view, Tinubu’s administration is not in a position to win public support for a second term. He stated bluntly that anyone expecting a Tinubu victory in 2027 is “living in another country, not Nigeria.”

“It is impossible for Bola Tinubu to get re-elected. I don’t see a pathway for him, no matter how disorganised the opposition is. Who will vote for him? But that’s my own opinion,” El-Rufai said in a snippet of the interview circulating online.

His comments come despite recent high-profile endorsements for President Tinubu within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Just last week, the APC leadership and the National Assembly passed a vote of confidence in the president. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also declared Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for 2027, expressing optimism about his re-election.

Additionally, APC governors, during a summit held in Abuja, threw their weight behind Tinubu, unanimously endorsing him as the party’s flagbearer for the next presidential contest.

Despite these endorsements, El-Rufai maintains that the prevailing economic hardship, rising inflation, insecurity, and public dissatisfaction with the current administration are strong indicators that re-election will be extremely difficult for Tinubu.

While he acknowledged the internal crisis and fragmentation within opposition parties, El-Rufai argued that even in a weakened state, the opposition stands a better chance than the incumbent administration due to public sentiment.

The former governor’s remarks have sparked widespread debate and reactions online, particularly within political circles and among citizens grappling with the realities of the current economic environment.

As the political landscape begins to shift toward 2027, El-Rufai’s critical assessment adds to the growing discourse on President Tinubu’s leadership and the future of governance in Nigeria.
