NewsOnline Nigeriareports that some officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have resigned from their positions, citing ongoing challenges within the commission and the recent Supreme Court ruling that nullified the local government elections held on October 5, 2024.
The Supreme Court had recently annulled the elections, ruling that they did not comply with electoral guidelines.
In response, RSIEC announced a fresh local government election scheduled for August 9, 2025.
The commission chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. His statement followed a directive from Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who ordered the commission to begin preparations for new elections.
Governor Fubara remains locked in a political struggle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over control of political structures in the state.
Meanwhile, RSIEC is currently under investigation by the Rivers State House of Assembly regarding its handling of the October 2024 election.
