NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the nomination of Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), alongside two additional appointments to key commissioner roles within the agency.
The announcement was made Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
“Engr Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator, with a PhD in Strategic Management, among other qualifications,” the statement noted.
Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, at 39, becomes one of the youngest appointees to lead a major federal regulatory body. With a robust academic and administrative background, Ramat is expected to bring a fresh perspective to NERC at a time when Nigeria is grappling with significant power sector challenges.
While his appointment is subject to Senate confirmation, President Tinubu has directed him to assume office in an acting capacity to avoid a leadership vacuum at the Commission.
President Tinubu also nominated:
Mr. Abubakar Yusuf – Commissioner for Consumer Affairs
Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun – Commissioner for Finance and Management Services
Both appointments are likewise pending Senate confirmation.
The appointments come as the Nigerian government intensifies efforts to reform and stabilize the electricity sector, which continues to face issues of poor generation, distribution inefficiencies, and consumer dissatisfaction.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) plays a critical role in overseeing the country’s power market, and these new appointments are expected to align with President Tinubu’s broader reform agenda.
