Museveni has won Uganda’s Presidential Election and extended his 40-year rule.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Uganda has officially declared President Yoweri Museveni as the winner of the 2026 presidential election, extending his rule of more than three decades after a closely contested poll conducted amid an internet blackout and restrictions on civil society activities.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Simon Byabakama, who disclosed that the incumbent president secured over 7.9 million votes, the highest tally among all contestants.

According to the commission, Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, surpassed the constitutional requirement by polling more than 50 per cent of the total valid votes cast in the election.

“Having obtained the highest number of votes in the election and the votes cast in his favour being more than 50 per cent of the total valid votes cast at the election, the Commission hereby declares Candidate Yoweri Museveni as the winner of the election,” Byabakama said.

Official results showed that about 11.4 million Ugandans participated in Thursday’s poll, representing a voter turnout of 52.50 per cent of registered voters.
