#FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest is currently underway despite police ban.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that despite a police ban and court injunction, protesters demanding the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, have begun gathering in parts of Abuja under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.

The protest, led by activist Omoyele Sowore and supported by several opposition figures, is calling for the immediate release of Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021.

This development comes after the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) issued a stern warning on Saturday, cautioning the group against staging any march within or around the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Eagle Square, Court of Appeal, and Shehu Shagari Way.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the warning followed a restraining order issued by the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025.

Hundeyin emphasized that the police would “strictly enforce the court’s directive” and arrest anyone who defies it.

“In deference to the authority of the Court and in line with the Police’s constitutional duty to maintain law and order, we urge all groups; whether for or against the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to comply fully with the court’s order,” he stated.

He further warned that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it must be conducted within the limits of the law, stressing that any attempt to incite violence or vandalize property would be met with decisive action.

The NPF also disclosed that social media footage and digital evidence would be used to identify and prosecute anyone inciting violence or violating the order online.

Meanwhile, heavy security presence has been observed around Eagle Square, the National Assembly, and the Presidential Villa as tension builds ahead of the planned demonstration.
