NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has granted approval for nine new private universities to operate nationwide, further expanding Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The announcement was made by Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Wednesday.
The newly approved universities include:
Tazkiyah University, Kaduna State
Leadership University, Abuja
Jimoh Babalola University, Kwara State
Bridget University, Mbaise, Imo State
Greenland University, Jigawa State
JEFAP University, Niger State
Azione Verde University, Imo State
Unique Open University, Lagos State
American Open University, Ogun State
Dr. Alausa noted that the Tinubu administration inherited 551 pending applications for new tertiary institutions. After applying stricter guidelines, the number of active applications was reduced to 79, with the nine newly approved universities helping to clear a backlog that, in some cases, had lasted over six years.
The minister attributed previous delays to inefficiencies within the National Universities Commission (NUC), which have now been addressed through reforms. Many of the approved institutions already have operational campuses and had invested significant funds while awaiting accreditation.
A moratorium has been placed on new applications for private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, allowing only institutions that meet the updated operational standards to apply.
