Following the sad events that occurred in the state of Anambra last week, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, respectively, have expressed their condolences for the tragedy.
Newsonline reports that the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi and the former vice president Atiku, commiserated with the people and government of Anambra State on the boat mishap which claimed the lives of over 10 passengers and the death of Sylvester Nwobu, a politician and statesman of the country.
Reacting to the death of Nwobu, Obi described the late politician as a godfather and a man of wise council.
He said, “I am personally pained by the loss of my very Dear Uncle, Chief Sylvester Nwobu Alor. Even though he was well advanced in age, his passing is still a huge loss of a respected, celebrated and explored life. Chief Nwobu Alor was not just an uncle, he was a huge mentor and father figure in my political life.
“I highly valued his wise counsel. His grasp of the inner workings of Nigerian politics was profound. In very self-effacing ways, he cherished his role as an adviser who always stayed in the background. He will be sorely missed.”
Obi said the boat mishap, which claimed about seventy lives, and the Nasarawa flood which damaged properties worth about $20 million is regrettable.
“I’m saddened by the loss of scores of lives in a boat mishap at Umunankwo community in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State. My deepest condolences to the families that may have lost a loved one and to the people and government of Anambra. May their souls rest in peace.
“Earlier, I received with sadness the reports of a boat mishap in Anambra State, which claimed no fewer than 76 lives and the destruction of 10,000 Hectares Of Olam Rice Farm and Mill in Nasarawa State valued at $20 million by floods.
“These incidents and very related unreported events have continued to occur in recent times. These are challenging times for us as a nation. But united in purpose and efforts, we shall come out stronger,” the Labour Party presidential candidate mourned.
The Waziri of Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in his condolence message wrote, “I mourn those who lost their lives in the boat mishap and those who died in different parts of the country, in the different natural disasters. I condole with their families. I encourage Olam Nigeria Limited to stay strong. We are all in this together.”
