Appeal Court To Rule On Nnamdi Kanu Appeal To Quash Terrorism Charges Today

The court of appeal in Abuja will today deliver judgment on Nnamdi Kanu appeal challenging the seven-count charges against him by the federal government.

Newsonline reports that the court of appeal in Abuja will today deliver judgment in an appeal instituted by the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to quash terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

This was announced in a statement by IPOB lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

The federal government had re-arraigned Mr Kanu on an amended 15-count charge bordering on treasonable felony. However, on May 28, the trial judge struck out eight of the 15-count charges.

In the Appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CR/ 625/2022; Mr Kanu challenged the remaining seven-count charges against him and prayed the court to squash them.

He said, “We wish to inform UmuChineke and all followers of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu that we have just received notification from the Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division, that the long-awaited judgment in Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal No. CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022 between Nnamdi Kanu and the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be delivered tomorrow, 13th October 2022, at 2 pm.

“We are very excited with this news as we look forward to a victorious outing. The legal team is leaving no stone unturned as we have been working assiduously behind the scene.”

Kanu had faulted the order of Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court, Abuja, which ordered him to answer seven out of the 15-count terrorism charge against him.

He had prayed the Court of Appeal to quash the entire charges and set him free on various grounds, among which the purported offences were not committed in Nigeria.

Justice Hanatu Sankey, who led a three-man panel of justices that heard the appeal, had reserved judgment.
