Yobe North: Lawan Heads To Supreme Court

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, may have said he recognized Bachir Machina as the APC senatorial candidate for Yobe North, but Supreme Court will tomorrow hear a case from APC seeking recognition of Lawan as the party’s candidate.

NewsOnline reports that though the Nigerian senate president after a Federal High Court and subsequent Appeal Court rulings consistently released statements that he was contesting Machina’s victory, the question begs if APC wins against Machina, will Lawan take the Yobe North Senatorial ticket?

Recall that the primary election of Yobe North Senatorial district was conducted on 28th May 2022 at a time, Lawan contested for the 2023 presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which he lost to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

On Monday, however, Court documents, FHC/DM/CS/11/2022, according to Daily post indicated that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is challenging the decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal that affirmed the candidature of Machina.

From the appeal, the APC on behalf of Lawan is seeking the leave of the apex court to set aside decisions of the trial and appellate courts and declare him the winner.

The hearing has been slated for February 1 (tomorrow – Wednesday) by the Supreme Court.
