Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has called on Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Bola Tinubu, presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party, and All Progressive Congress, respectively to declare their assets publicly before the February 2023 general election.

Newsonline reports that SERAP renewed the call for public assets declaration following the presidential candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, declaration of his assets publicly.

SERAP said it is a duty owed the electorates as the 2023 general election approaches for the contestants to declare their assets public to the citizens.

Omoyele Sowore, AAC, presidential candidate, declared $300 (three hundred dollars) in his US account, 2 cars, and a 4-bedroom bungalow as his assets in the United States.

Sowore wrote, “I have two used cars: a Toyota Camry and Lexus RX 350, a home in my village worth maybe N5m, three iPhones, a Galaxy Note 10 Lite (if you could call those assets), SaharaReporters Media Group (don’t know the worth as of today), a four-bedroom bungalow in New Jersey & nothing more!”

He added, “A bank account I operated in Nigeria had N4,800 left in before my arrest.

“I managed to open another with N463.00 as of this evening. I also recently opened a @capitalone US bank account that has in it about $300, I have a campaign account for the #Sowore2023 Presidential account.

“I have nothing more besides financial support that I occasionally get from friends and family (if those count as assets).”

SERAP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organization, devoted to promoting transparency, accountability & respect for socio-economic rights called on Peter Obi, Atiku and Tinubu to take a cue from Sowore and declare their assets publicly for the electorates to vote rightly.

SERAP also called on the LP, PDP and APC, presidential candidates to declare their commitment to a free and fair election, rejecting vote buying in totality.

“We’re calling on Atiku, Tinubu and Peter Obi to take a cue from Sowore, by urgently publishing their assets and publicly rejecting vote buying before and during the February 2023 general elections,” SERAP wrote.

SERAP particularly wrote to Peter Obi who has massive followers of Nigeran youths to publish his assets public before the February 2023 election.

“Dear Peter Obi Ahead of the February 2023 presidential election, we’re again calling on you to show leadership by urgently publishing details of your assets and publicly rejecting vote-buying and electoral bribery before and during the elections,” SERAP wrote.
