Peter Obi
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the violent disruption of the opening ceremony of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, describing the incident as a direct attack on Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement shared on his verified account on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Obi expressed concern over what he described as the growing decline in democratic standards in the country.
“What happened at the ADC office in Bakassi is not merely an attack on a political party; it is an attack on democracy itself,” Obi said.
The former governor of Anambra State warned that the continued tolerance of political violence and misconduct could further weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
According to him, the failure to hold perpetrators accountable reflects a troubling erosion of leadership standards in the country.
“When thugs can storm a party office and destroy property without facing arrest, it reflects how dangerously low our democratic standards have fallen,” he stated.
Obi also cautioned that fraudulent practices in politics could fuel instability and violence in the nation’s political system.
“The ability for individuals to present forged certificates for election sends a troubling message to our society. If we continue down this path, violence may become the future of our democracy,” he added.
He emphasized that credible leadership cannot emerge from a system characterized by intimidation, fraud, and political thuggery, warning that such actions ultimately threaten the nation’s stability and the future of its citizens.
Obi’s reaction followed reports that suspected political thugs disrupted the ADC secretariat opening ceremony in Bakassi on Saturday. The attackers reportedly dispersed party supporters and vandalized event materials, including canopies, chairs, loudspeakers, and other equipment arranged for the launch.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about political violence and the need to strengthen democratic institutions ahead of future elections in Nigeria.
