#Owomassacre: UN Disagrees With FG, Makes Strong Demand

The United Nations has disagreed with Federal government and made a strong demand on the killing worshipers in Owo, Ondo State.

 

Newsonline reports that UN said it was the right of the Federal government to keep religious places and citizens safe.

 

High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilisations, UNAOC, Mr Miguel Moratinos, said it was time the Federal government implements the action plan for #forSafeWorship of UNAOC.

 

Mr Miguel said the UN Plan Action to Safe Religious Sites, developed by UNAOC, was to address issues of religious site attacks and ensure protection of religious worshipers.

 

Condemning the attack, Moratinos said it was worrisome that armed men would attack worshipers who had not provoked anyone.

 

He called on the Federal government to immediately implement the action plan of UNAOC, to avoid such attacks. This is as he called the Federal government to ensure the the attackers are apprehended and made to face the law.

 

Moratinos called for mutual respect of all religions and faiths and for fostering a culture of fraternity and peace.

 

Moratinos recalled the UN Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites, developed by UNAOC, and appealed to all governments and relevant stakeholders to support its implementation.

 

Mr Moratinos made the statement in reaction to the attack at  St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria, by alleged herdsmen during the Pentecost mass on Sunday.

Also United Nations, Secretary-General, António Guterres, has also condemned in “strongest terms” the killing of Catholic worshipers at Owo, Ondo State.

 

The UN Chief, Guterres said the attack was “heinous and abhorrent” and unprovoked.

 

Guterres called on the Federal government to set actions in place to round off the attackers and ensure justice is done.

 

Moratinos also called on the global youth and faith communities to join UNAOC’s global call to action #forSafeWorship to contribute to celebrating the universality of religious sites as symbols of our shared humanity, history and traditions.

 

Newsonline had reported that armed herdsmen invaded worshipers at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, and killed 50 worshipers during Pentcost Sunday. Read more.
