BREAKING: Police ASP Arrested Over Death Of UniUyo Student In Custody

Police ASP has been arrested over the death of UniUyo Student while in custody.

Newsonline reports that Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Joweigha Michael, has been arrested over the demise of a student of the University of Uyo, Kubiat Isaac, who was reportedly beaten to death for armed robbery and cultism.

This online newspaper gathered that the deceased, who was a graduate of the University of Uyo waiting for his NYSC enrolment in November, was under investigation on suspicion of armed robbery and cultism, after his arrest at a store in August 29, 2021.

The demised, Newsonline gathered was arrested by the police for robbery before he was taken to the station without filing the case.

It was further learnt that the UniUyo graduate was later beaten to death in the police cell.

However, the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, in a statement on Saturday, stated that Isaac died in a police clinic where he was taken for treatment after he was reported ill during questioning.

Macdon said, “It is expedient to state that the said Kubiat Isaac was being investigated for the offence of suspected Armed Robbery and Cultism, and had been evading arrest for sometime.

“He was traced to and arrested at Eni Stores on the 29th of August, 2021 and taken for questioning. On arrival at the Division, the DPO ordered that he be transferred to the State CID where the case was pending for a discreet investigation.

“Unfortunately, the Suspect said he was sick. He was taken to the Police Clinic for treatment but gave up the ghost in the process,” the police spokesperson stated.

He further noted that the State Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew, has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of Isaac’s death, adding that the torture of suspects by police operatives will not be tolerated.

The police spokesperson, therefore, sympathized with the family of the deceased just as he assured that the police officer would be held accountable and made to face the law if found culpable for the death of the suspect.
