Makinde: Court Stops Oyo House Of Assembly From Impeaching Raufu Over Defection

Hope embraced the embattled deputy governor of Oyo State, Raufu Olaniyan, as a State High Court sitting in Ibadan stopped the state House of Assembly members from carrying out impeachment action over defection.

Newsonline reports that Raufu Olaniyan approached the State High Court on Tuesday to restrain the honorable members of the house from carrying out their impeachment action against him, calling their action unconstitutional.

Justice Oladiran Akintola who delivered the ruling, granted the prayer of Raufu Olaniyan, restraining the House from carrying out the impeachment action against the deputy governor.

Justice Oladiran Akintola, however, adjoined the case to Wednesday for further hearing.

Reacting to the ruling of the State High Court, Peoples Democratic Party, the ruling party in the state said the state cannot continue to play bad politics.

PDP stated that the Raufu Olaniyan should better resign as it will use all legal instruments available to ensure he is removed from his position as the deputy governor of Oyo state.

Mogaji Wale Oladoja, PDP chieftain, who reacted to the ruling said, “We are going to remove him with all legal means. I spoke with the leadership of the assembly and I can assure you that they are yet to receive such a directive from the court. This is an issue of morality. He should resign honourably.

“We cannot continue to play bad politics. The party that brought you into power must be respected. Let him resign to avoid disgrace.”

24 out of the 32 members of the State House of Assembly had last week petitioned the speaker of the house against Raufu Olaniyan over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, financial recklessness, abandonment of office, insubordination and other offenses by the deputy governor.

The deputy governor, Raufu Olaniyan, had dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State in the build-up to the state primary election dropped Raufu Olaniyan as running mate.
