The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said the prolonged industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has kept their students away from classrooms now for many months cannot stop it from conducting another round of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) when it is due.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, gave this position in Lagos, on Saturday, while monitoring the mop-up exam, specially arranged for candidates whose centres were allegedly involved in malpractice and candidates with biometric issues during the general examination for this year in May.
About 1.7 million candidates sat for the exam nationwide while no fewer than 42, 000 candidates from the number sat the mop-up exam across 10 centres (outside their original centres) in about five states of the federation including Abia, Anambra, Delta, Edo and Lagos.
JAMB said the process of agreeing a uniform national Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, score for high institution admission seekers involves all the Heads of the Institutions in attendance and is chaired by the Hon. Minister of Education.
JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, made the clarification while commenting on a statement made by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, former president, Prof. Nasir Fagge.
Benjamin stated that what is called cut-off mark reported to have always come from JAMB was never the board’s affair.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Thursday pegged the deadline for the 2022 admissions as December 31, 2022.
This is as the board also stated that it would no longer accept A’Level results by the National Business and Technical Education Board for Direct Entry admissions.
JAMB Deadline For 2022 Admission was disclosed during the 2022 policy meeting organized by the board in Abuja.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said, “The Minister of Education has approved that the NABTEB A’Level GCE will no longer be recognized as a qualification for Direct Entry from 2022. However, all those who have already obtained it prior to this date will be able to use it.
NewsOnline reports that the House of Representatives passed a bill for second reading that will make Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results valid for four years.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Tolulope Akande-Sadipe and seeking to change the JAMB Act, 2021, is titled “A bill for act to amend the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (Establishment ETC Act, 2022) and other connected things.”
Leading the discussion, Sadipe stated that many students take the JAMB examination and get outstanding scores, but for one reason or another, they are not admitted for no fault of their own.
She claimed that these children and their parents were forced to endure the financial burden of taking the exam the following year.
According to her, one of the arguments that JAMB purportedly keeps bringing up in this respect is that it was for income generating.
The cut-off marks for the 2022/2023 admission have been announced. This was disclosed during the JAMB policy meeting held today.
The decision was taken after a heated session comprising officials from JAMB, the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and the National Board for Technical Education among others.
The Registrar of JAMB has disclosed that only 378,639 of the 1,761,338 who wrote the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scored 200 and above. The Registrar made this known at the 2022 JAMB Policy meeting.
A total of 520,596 candidates scored 190 and above ; 704,991 scored 180 and above; 934,103 scored 170 and above; 1,192, 057 scored 160 and above.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that tertiary institutions in Nigeria were unable to conduct the 2021 admissions within the time frame due to constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is as the board noted that it would meet with institutions and other agencies to determine the 2022 admissions cut-off, among others, on Thursday, July 21, 2022.
These were disclosed in the board’s weekly bulletin, which was made available to NewsOnline Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.
The bulletin read, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has fixed Thursday, July 21, 2022, for the 2022 Policy Meeting and the third edition (2020) of the NATAP-M Awards.
“The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, would chair the policy meeting as well as serve as the chief host of the NATAP-M Awards Ceremony.
“The two events, which are scheduled to be held on the same day and place, will have in attendance heads of tertiary institutions, heads of regulatory agencies in the education sector, and other critical stakeholders such as Chairmen of the Committee on Education at the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly.”

Newsonline reports that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied reports of error in the scoring of candidates in the just concluded 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This is as the examination body has warned the public, especially candidates at the just concluded UTME against the deceitful and other unsavoury activities of fraudsters who were making false claims of errors in the scoring system.
This disclosure is contained in a statement issued by JAMB’s Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, and made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
Benjamin said that the board is insisting that the UTME was a Computer Based Test (CBT) that was scored electronically with no human mediation whatsoever, as well as debunked rumour of plans to organize another UTME.
Benjamin in the statement said, “Consequently, the unfounded rumours making the rounds are nothing but the products of the deceitful brains of the masterminds of these baseless imputations.
“Hence, the board reiterates that there is no room for errors in its electronic scoring system nor does it plan to organise another UTME.
“This clarification became necessary following reports of a purported rescheduling of the UTME from a section of the social media citing phantom errors in the computer scoring system and a purported apology from JAMB to the effect that another UTME would be organised.
