Market women in several markets in Ojo, Ojo LGA of Lagos State, could not hide their joys as they welcomed the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Funke Akindele on Monday (today).
Newsonline reports that the warm welcome market women gave Funke a screen diva, some political experts say sent fear down the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party in power in the state.
In their interactions, the market women expressed delight that the Nollywood veteran would reduce the high levies they alleged they are made to pay every day by the Sanwo-Olu government.
Expressing gratitude for the welcome given to his deputy governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, described the warm reception of Funke by the market women on Ojo as goodwill from Lagos residents.
Jandor said the warm reception was a show of acceptance of their candidacy by the market women and men who are heavily levied by the present government.
“This is something that we don’t see every day on the streets of Ojo,” Jandor said, adding “genuine excitement to meet with and hear from a political candidate. That is the kind of goodwill Funke Akindele has with Lagosians, a pact she intends to honour as Deputy Governor of Lagos state.”
He further added, “She visited several markets in Ojo as part of our tour of Ojo LGA, conferring with the traders to learn the peculiar challenges they face doing business and sharing our message of progress coming on a breath of fresh air.”
“Despite their joy, there was much to be concerned about, especially the poor state of the markets, the impossible levies these people trying to make an earnest living are expected to pay to continue to sell their wares, and the rising inflation that diminishes their hard work.
“Things cannot continue like this, and we are determined to break the cycle of poor governance by ousting the present government at the polls next year,” the PDP Lagos governorship candidate added.
