Akwa Ibom Happy Hour has kicked off as promised by the governor-elect.

NewsOnline reports that there is jubilation in Akwa Ibom State, southern Nigeria, following the commencement of “Happy Hour” as promised by Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom governor-elect.

This online news platform recalls that Umo Eno as the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, had promised that there will be ‘happy hour’ in the state every Friday if elected into office.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Happy hour is a marketing term for a time when a venue such as a restaurant or bar offers reduced prices on alcoholic drinks. Discounted menu items like appetizers are often served during happy hour. This is a way for bars and restaurants to draw in more business before or after peak business hours.

In a video that went viral before the March 18, 2023 governorship election, the Akwa Ibom PDP Governorship Candidate Eno could be heard saying he’ll subsidise alcohol between 5 pm and 6 pm on Fridays.

“Every Friday, I will have what I call happy hour for the state. And what do I want to do with happy hour? It’s simple. I want to create business for people that have facility. So, we declare that between 5 and 6, these are the bars that will sell drinks at certain price,” he had said.

On March 19, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno as the winner of the March 18 governorship poll in the state.

Eno polled 354,348 to defeat his closest rivals — Akanimo Udofia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 129,602 votes and Labour Party (LP)’s Uduakobong who got 4,746 votes.

Eno, a former Commissioner for Lands in Akwa Ibom and the anointed candidate of the incumbent governor, Udom Emmanuel, whose two terms of eight years will end on May 29, 2023, was declared the winner by INEC Returning Officer in the state, Prof Emmanuel Adigio.

As part of his 2023 campaign promises of establishing “Happy Hour in Akwa Ibom State“, Newsonline Nigeria reports that the event kicked off over the weekend to the delight of the residents of Akwa Ibom State.

In a video seen by this Newsonline Nigeria reporter, a resident of the state who was apparently excited about the experience, could be heard saying: “I am happy because I am alive, this is the first time I discovered and experienced Happy hour today since I was born.”
